Convert bytes between decimal units (KB, MB, GB, TB) and binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB). See why a 500 GB disk shows up as 465 GiB. The math runs in the tab.

Enter a size to see it in decimal (KB, MB) and binary (KiB, MiB) units. A bare number is read as bytes.

About this tool

Convert a byte count between decimal units (KB, MB, GB, TB, PB, powers of 1000) and binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB, PiB, powers of 1024). Disk makers use the first, and many operating systems and tools report the second.

How to use: type 1.5 GiB, 500 MB, or a bare number of bytes. Every unit appears in its own card with a copy button. Units are case-insensitive, so mb and MB both mean megabytes.

Example: 500 GB is 500000000000 bytes, which is about 465.66 GiB. That gap is why a new drive looks smaller than the box says. Bits are out of scope, so divide network speeds in Mbps by 8 first.

Math is local. Related: string length for the UTF-8 byte size of a pasted string. After load, converting works offline.
