# ULID Generator

> Generate ULID identifiers in the browser, or decode one to the millisecond timestamp it stores. Each ID is 26 Crockford Base32 characters: time first, then randomness, so the text sorts by creation time. Uses the Web Crypto RNG. Nothing is uploaded.

## About this tool

Generate ULID identifiers in the browser: 26 Crockford Base32 characters with a millisecond timestamp prefix and 80 bits of randomness. Make one ID or a list of up to 100, or paste existing IDs to read the time they encode.

How to use: pick Generate, set the count, and copy. IDs created in one click share a timestamp and increase the random part so the list stays sorted. Decode accepts one ULID per line, ignores letter case, and treats I, L, and O as Crockford aliases.

Example: a generated ID decodes to a UTC instant plus the random suffix. Use these for database primary keys, event ids, and log lines where you want sortable ids without a server.

Randomness comes from crypto.getRandomValues. Nothing is stored. Related: the UUID generator for RFC 4122 v4 and v7, and the random string tool for custom tokens.

## FAQ

### How is a ULID different from a UUID?

A ULID is 26 Crockford Base32 characters, not a hyphenated hex UUID. The front encodes the millisecond timestamp, so sorting the text sorts by creation time. UUID v4 does not. UUID v7 is time-ordered too, but it is still the UUID text format.

- [Password Generator](https://toolbuddy.dev/tools/password-generator.md): Create strong random passwords and passphrases in your browser. Tune length, symbols, and ambiguity, then copy once. Generation uses local randomness and never phones home. A private generator for accounts, test users, and sharing secrets over a side channel you control.
- [Random String Generator](https://toolbuddy.dev/tools/random-string.md): Generate random alphanumeric strings with a charset and length you choose. Handy for tokens, test IDs, and dummy keys. Uses local randomness so generated values are not logged by a hosted generator.
- [Random JSON Generator](https://toolbuddy.dev/tools/random-json.md): Generate nested JSON fixtures for mocks and tests. Tune depth and item count, then copy a valid object or array. Built with the Web Crypto RNG so dummy payloads are created on-device.
- [Random Number Generator](https://toolbuddy.dev/tools/random-number.md): Pick random integers or decimals in a min–max range, one at a time or in a list. Simple test data and dice-style rolls without a remote RNG. Generated on your device.
- [QR Code Generator](https://toolbuddy.dev/tools/qr-generator.md): Encode a URL or any text as a QR code in the browser. Tune error correction, size, and colors, then download PNG or SVG. Encoding stays on the device. There is no QR API.
