## About this tool

Convert between octal modes such as 755 and symbolic permissions such as rwxr-xr-x. Toggle read, write, and execute for owner, group, and others, plus setuid, setgid, and the sticky bit.

How to use: type 3 or 4 octal digits, or click the checkboxes. Copy the chmod command from the sticky bar. A path with spaces is quoted in the command. Nothing is executed.

Example: 755 is rwxr-xr-x, a typical mode for scripts. 644 is rw-r--r--, a typical mode for files. 2755 shows setgid as rwxr-sr-x.

Modes stay in the tab. This does not run chmod on your disk and does not upload paths. Related: gitignore generator for repo files, and the number base converter for plain octal arithmetic.

## FAQ

### Does the chmod command change file permissions?

Yes. When you run the copied command in a shell, chmod sets that file's mode. This page only writes the command. It does not run it, and it does not upload the path.
